What are you looking forward to this summer?
This summer, I’m kind of just hanging out. I’ve traveled so much in the last eight months, so I’m ready to stay put for a second and then figure the rest out. I’m opening for Nick Wagen, who I’ve been friends with for a while now. It’s going to be a full band show, which I haven’t done in a while, so I’m really looking forward to it!
How did you get started in music?
I started music because I moved to the States when I was about 8 years old, and my older sister had started taking voice lessons. She got into the musical theater world, and as the little sister, I was obviously copying anything she did. Turns out, I had a really big passion for it. The first impactful pieces of media and music that really stuck to me are the music videos that would play between Disney Channel shows as commercial breaks. A Year Without Rain by Selena Gomez, 7 Things by Miley Cyrus–basically all the female powerhouse vocalists on Disney were my big inspirations.
What type of summer are you having?
I don’t think I’m having a hot girl summer–I’m having a soft yearning summer. I actually wrote a song about this and it’s called Softer, which is up on my TikTok. Especially between highschool and my first two years of college, I was quicker to be snappy and sassy. I used to put a lot of comedy at the front of a lot of my relationships and conversations, but over time, I’ve become more grounded. I’ve found pleasure in just being more chill. Every year, I try to not lose that side of myself, but I’ve realized it takes less energy to just let things rest.
This summer, I’m really trying to pour into my friendships and community–especially under the current administration and the state of the world. It’s a scary time to be alive, and not the time to be arguing or not getting along. So truly, all my energy this summer is going into creating music and art that matters, and making sure my corner of the world feels good.
What was the songwriting process like for your upcoming project?
As I finished writing the hill that i die on,I just kept writing songs–and for the first time ever I loved all of the songs I had written. This upcoming project is a collection of songs I’ve written since 2023, and they all feel true to myself.
What’s nostalgic about summer?
I’d say my most nostalgic memories of summer are from the ages 10 to 14, living in a cul-de-sac where me and all of the kids in the neighborhood were really close. We’d play Minecraft all the time, and would also have Otter Pops–which are extremely nostalgic to me. Silly Bandz are also really nostalgic of those summers.
Even now, sometimes I’ll be walking in New York, and I’m like, ‘Oh my god, it smells like my aunt’s house.’ Or sometimes certain sunscreens, like Sun Bum or Neutrogena, feel very nostalgic.
