What’s the story behind ‘Should we do it again?’?
I wrote this song in May of last year, right after me and my ex had broken up and he just kept wanting to get back together. I felt like I had to really ask myself if that’s what I really wanted. He was so persistent that I was like “Okay, like should we?” but spoiler alert… NO!
How did this track come to life?
I wrote the song in my bedroom and brought it to my friends Andrew and Sam – who made my first EP with me. I played it for them and they were into it so we started building out the production together. We did a ton of vocal stacks and harmony layers, which Andrew has a good ear for. We went through four different versions of the song with different production elements before it clicked. They had sent me a Dropbox link with the new version and I was in my car, driving, windows down and I was like “All of the pieces finally make sense.” It’s so simple and there’s not a lot going on but it has a really beautiful arc that gets wider and wider and then it kind of ends abruptly which I feel like you wouldn’t expect and it’s also a metaphor for the relationship I was in and how it went where it had that big arc and then it was just like “I can’t do this anymore.”
What was the inspiration behind the cover art?
My friend Lena took that photo in New York a couple months ago. It was almost a year since I wrote the song and we shot it at her apartment– we spent all day together walking around Brooklyn and taking tons of different photos. Then we went to edit everything together and my friend Jimmy put the green tinted hue on the image – he did different versions with other colors but the song feels green to me. I feel like the original photo is very bright but we kind of darkened and muted in a way to represent the relationship in a way.
What do you want listeners to take away from this track?
DON’T GO BACK TO HIM!
What did you learn from this writing experience?
I feel like I learned that you can love someone and still know they’re not the right one for you. I think when you realize that-and when you know someone is more invested in the relationship than you are-it’s incredibly selfish to stay in it. And if you can’t walk away for yourself, then do it for them. You don’t need to keep someone’s heart in a position where you know you’re not going to take care of it.
If ‘Should we do it again?’ was part of a movie soundtrack what movie would it be part of?
